Mark Novak, Head of Tax, Aviva Canada

Mark is leader of the Tax Department for the Aviva Canada group of companies, where he is responsible for all direct and indirect tax reporting, compliance, and planning.  In particular, he provides expert tax advice to senior management and business units on new initiatives, acquisitions, investments, and restructuring plans. 

Prior to joining Aviva, he was an international tax advisor with Deloitte & Touche LLP and Ernst & Young LLP, working both in Canada and the U.S.A.  Earlier professional experience included tax policy work with the Federal Department of Finance, and practicing tax and corporate law in the private sector. 

Mark is a member of the Insurance Bureau of Canada Tax Panel, and Past-Executive Committee member of the Canadian Bar Association, Taxation Branch.  He is also a contributor to Tax Management International Forum (BNA International), the Canadian Tax Foundation and Co-Editor, Tax Management Business Operations in Canada (Bureau of National Affairs), and spoken at tax and industry conferences.
